Winter in DC can be rough. Living in a cold climate like ours, you have two choices. Hibernate in your home through the winter season (which is sometimes an attractive option) or bundle up and go out and embrace the fun winter activities.
We have to admit, we do a little of both when the frigid air moves in but like most people, we can’t slow down just because it’s cold outside. Living in the city for the past 5 years + we have learned the ins and outs of surviving the brutal winters here in DC.
Listed below are the 5 ways that we make cold living fun during the dark and frigid months of winter.
1. Kennedy Center![5 Ways To Survive Winter In DC - Kennedy Center]()
What’s a better pick-me-up on a cold winter day than a theater or musical performance? The Kennedy Center is a DC staple and something that you have to do at least once while living or visiting our Nation’s Capital.
There are tons of performances to choose from and its the perfect way to spend a chilly night with a date or with your family. Tickets to a show at the Kennedy Center also make wonderful gifts!
2. Ice Skating![5 Ways To Survive Winter In DC - Ice Skating]()
National Gallery Ice Rink is one of our favorite spots to go ice-skating in the city. The rink opens November 14, 2014 and continues to stay open through March 16, 2015, weather permitting.
Tickets are super reasonable at $8.00 for adults and $7.00 for children. Bring a thermos of hot coco along, bundle up in your warmest winter attire and hit the ice!
3. S’mores by The Fire at The Ritz in Georgetown![5 Ways To Survive Winter In DC- Ritz Carlton-Smores]()
Hot Cider and Free S’mores? Sign us up! There’s a fire blazing in the lobby of the Ritz in Georgetown almost every evening around 6:30pm and if you are lucky enough to get a seat by the fire then you have hit the jackpot my friend!
Free s’more are passed out by one of their sharply dressed butlers and they pair perfectly with one of their seasonal crafted cocktails on the happy hour menu. This is the perfect place to have a hot toddy and a sweet snack before you head out for a romantic evening.
4. Bundle Up in Style![5 Ways To Survive Winter In DC - Bundle Up in Style]()
We are huge fans of layering for all seasons but for winter in our Nation’s Capitol, it’s as much about survival as it is about style.
Feel free to go nuts with this, all the way from tanks and tees outward to button down shirts (love this one), sweaters, vests, capes and coats. Pile em on!
But make sure to put some thought and effort into coordinating your look, otherwise you may find someone’s loose change swimming in the bottom of your peppermint mocha… which can definitely ruin your day.
5. Visit The Newseum![5 Ways To Survive Winter In DC - Newseum]()
The Newseum is one of our favorite museums in DC and it is a wonderful spot to escape the cold weather and check out the exciting exhibits they have on display.
The Newseum is located in Washington, DC and is a six-level, high-tech and interactive museum tracing the history of news reporting from the 16th century to the present day. Perfect for all ages! Costs are $22.95 for adults and $13.95 for children 7-18 and free for children 6 and under.
Bundle up and stay warm in these frigid winter months but make sure not to miss out on all of the fun there is to be had!
